Tired of writing greeting cards? Send musical wishes and reduce your carbon foot print! Our string students will help. At the same time you are helping them!

Make a donation to the SASS Violin Fund and our Talented Young Violinist from SASS and TEC will perform a Live Holiday Musical Greeting just for them. They will be unique personalized musical messages from you. A Musical Holiday Greeting will be sent live via Skype, Private Video or Phone.

We are looking for Qualified Tutors for our WrapAround Program!

Qualified tutor - a person who demonstrates proficiency in the subject matter assigned who can assist students with queries and difficulties relating to subject matter and who has received additional training in tutoring children with emotional and behavioral problems.

The program is the Wraparound Program which is a collaboration between Orange County Children’s Therapeutic Arts Center (OCCTAC) and the Orange County Social Services Agency.
We are committed to providing tutoring services for at-risk children. OCCTAC is seen as a focal point of therapeutic arts services for children and youth in Orange County. Providing access to services for all children and their families impacted by physical, cognitive, language, social, emotional or learning disabilities.
If you have the following:
· Experience working with transitional age youth
· Experience in working with a diverse community.
· Strong organization, writing and communication skills.
· Ability to work with multi-disciplinary teens with care including peers, and families.·

This program provides youth with the opportunity to acquire skills to successfully transition into the workforce, further their education, and reach their true work potential. Among other services, our program is designed to provide youth with hands-on PAID work experience and training in the arts, education, clerical, computer programs and technology. Celebrating the Success of our Violin Students

The Suzuki Violin Students at OCCTAC have been busy. Saturday, Oct. 1st, Irvine Global Village Festival Students from both SASS and TEC played their violins and serenaded children attending the Festival. The TEC Suzuki Booth became the Children’s music lounge, wedged between face painting and Japanese paper folding. We even got an interview with the Irvine City Community News reporter and the children played for the cameras. Hoping they will appear sometime later this year on the cultural page . The reporter studied violin as a youth and knew who Dr. Suzuki was. How lucky can you get. Monday, Oct. 10, Benise concert at the Grove, Spanish guitar and Latin Violinist as seen on PBS Ms. Cynthia and 16 SASS students and parent chaperones are invited to attend the Benise concert and stay for a ‘meet and greet’ after the concert. The complimentary tickets where made possible by the kind effort of Omar Lopez , the violinist featured at the concert. Omar is a young Latin violinist and composer who grew up in the LA area and continued his career relocating in Texas. He drew his inspiration to become a professional musician when he attended a Benise concert as a high school student. He is looking forward to meeting our students for photos and autographs. We hope to add a little of his star power to our website for inspiration. Saturday, Nov. 12, 3:00pm, OC Suzuki Festival, Salvation Army Church, 10200 Pioneer Road, Tustin This year 4 of our students have chosen to participate in the Orange County Suzuki Festival: Nathalie Rivas, Adrian Castaneda, Dominique Juarez and Michelle Juarez.Admission is free and the concert is open to the public And Watch out for our Musical Holiday Greetings! OCCTAC Community Art Workshop with Surfrider Foundation - Learn About Protecting The Oceans Through the Arts

Dear Friends!

We want to take the time to thank everyone who volunteered for our wonderful Ocean themed community art workshop at the Festival of Children.
Hundreds of kids got to decorate their reusable shopping bags and learned why it is important to keep plastics out of the ocean! We also created our dream islands and dream surfboards.
Gracias to Darrell Ferguson - who missed part of the action at Trestles during the Hurley Pro (Kelly Slater won it!) and Lindy Neubauer from Surfrider's Newport Beach Chapter for their support, the wonderful bags and their friendship!
Gracias to our visual arts director and surfer girl Kathryn Forrest who also sacrificed a morning in the waves. And a Big THANK YOU to our student volunteers, Judith, Moises, Jenny and Victoria and friends whose names we unfortunately did not capture.

Sunday, September 18: OCCTAC Teams Up With Surfrider Foundation at Festival of Children

Dear Parents & Children!

The OC Children’s Therapeutic Arts Center and the Newport Beach Chapter of Surfrider Foundation will team up to conduct this Sunday’s Festival of Children’s Community Art Workshop at South Coast Plaza.

Date: September 18, 2011
Time: Noon to 4PM
Location: Carousel Court

OCCTAC focuses on improving the lives of children through the arts.
Surfrider Foundation has been protecting oceans, waves and beaches since 1984.

Together we aim at educating all participating children and their families about the importance of using reusable grocery bags instead of single use plastic bags as well as keeping the Orange County beaches clean by protecting the Orange County water shed.

Now, what does this mean in terms of fun?
Kids will get to decorate their very own Surfrider Foundation canvas bags with ocean motives. The bags are theirs to keep and use - AND RE-USE!

Our friends from the Newport Beach Chapter of Surfrider Foundation will be present to teach kids why it matters to keep litter, plastic bags, automotive oil and other items out of the drains miles away from the beach.

The Joshua Bell Experiment: Do You Recognize Beauty In The Subway Station?

THE SITUATION
In Washington , DC , at a Metro Station, on a cold January morning in 2007, this man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, approximately 2,000 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After about 3 minutes, a middle-aged man noticed that there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds, and then he hurried on to meet his schedule.

About 4 minutes later:
The violinist received his first dollar. A woman threw money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.
At 6 minutes:
A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again. At 10 minutes:
A 3-year old boy stopped, but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head the whole time. This action was repeated by several other children, but every parent - without exception - forced their children to move on quickly.
At 45 minutes:
The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.
After 1 hour:
He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed and no one applauded. There was no recognition at all.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before, Joshua Bell sold-out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100 each to sit and listen to him play the same music.

This is a true story. Joshua Bell, playing incognito in the D.C. Metro Station, was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities.

This experiment raised several questions:

      *In a common-place environment, at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?

      *If so, do we stop to appreciate it?

      *Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made . . ..

How many other things are we missing as we rush through life?

OCCTAC Students To Participate In OC Symphony's Holiday Concert "The Gift Of Light"!

We are very happy to report that our opera singing student STEFANIE DIAZ and our HARP ENSEMBLE have been chosen to perform alongside top level professional musicians from the Orange County Symphony during the Holiday concert "The Gift Of Light" on December 17th, at 7PM at the Heritage Forum in Anaheim.
Friends and supporters have a chance to meet and mingle at the pre-concert event at Muzeo.
Dr. Ana Jimenez-Hami: "We are very grateful for this opportunity for our students to showcase their talent, skills and artistry. It is a wonderful chance for the Orange County community to see the results of their hard work and their family's dedication in a beautiful setting. It is also an inspiration for our students to have this amazing experience. It will always be a motivating special memory!"

In keeping with the spirit of Celebration, Giving, Sharing and Community, professional musicians from the Orange County Symphony partner with a group of selected young artists from two non-profit organizations in the annual Holiday Concert in Anaheim.

The program consists of

· A children’s candlelight procession from Orange County Children’s Therapeutic Arts Center (OCCTAC).

· A presentation of regional Mexican folkloric dance by the Project S.A.Y. (Support Anaheim’s Youth) Cultural Dance Program under the direction of Mario Morales.

· Performance by chamber group Ensemble Luz under the direction of OCS composer-in-residence Joseph Cristina showcasing Christmas music from Mexico and the Americas, featuring folkloric and classical vocalist Ana Gonzalez and musical soloists from OCCTAC including Stefanie Diaz and more (TBA).

· Performance of Willem de Fesch’s Concerto in D for flute and orchestra by the Orange County Symphony, featuring flute soloist Alice Park.

· Culminating with the main event:

The Orange County Symphony and Mountainside Master Chorale, under the baton of Maestro David Rentz, performing selections from Handel’s Messiah.

We are really happy to announce that ORQUESTA CARIBE will play for us on October 23rd!

Orquesta Caribe was founded in 1972 by Musical Director Armando Gomez. Originally comprised of Cuban exiles who settled in Orange County, Orquesta Caribe now consists of eleven musicians who perform traditional Cuban and Puerto Rican music such as Salsa, Son, Bolero, Cha-Cha, Merengue, and Cumbia.

Through its celebrated history, Orquesta Caribe has shared the stage with many of Latin Musics most famous musical stars including Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, El Gran Combo, Oscar De Leon, Eddie Santiago, Albita and many others.

The band is currently celebrating over thirty years as a mainstay in the Los Angeles and Orange County Latin music scene. They've been performing for countless Southern California audiences at many celebrated musical venues. Well known art world personalities Gregorio Luke and Alex Slato team up and join the auction as special guests. GREGORIO Luke provides his usual informative and entertaining narrative on the artists and their works. Alex Slato conducts the auction bringing his long experience in the Latin art world thought the U.S. and Latin America.

Consul Alejandra Garcia Williams

Gregorio Luke is an expert on Mexican and Latin American art and culture. He is the former Director of the Museum of Latin American Art, Consul of Cultural Affairs of Mexico in Los Angeles and the First Secretary of the embassy of Mexico in Washington D.C. He has given over 1,000 lectures in museums and universities in Mexico, Europe and the United States. He has spoken at institutions such as The Library of Congress, The Smithsonian Institution, the San Diego Art Museum, the Detroit Institute of Art, and universities such as Harvard, Columbia and Georgetown among others. In 2005 The Ebell of Los Angeles honored him with the Life Achievement Award, 2006 he received the El Angel Award by the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts and in 2007 he was recognized by CATE (California Association of Teacher’s in English). Alex Slato is a well known arts executive professional with a career that spans over 20 years. He is an accomplished director and professional auctioneer his capabilities have enhanced and raised the profiles of the various arts organizations he has been involved with most recently the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) where he served as Deputy Director, Associate Director and Vice President of Exhibitions and Special Projects, respectively.
In his various roles at MOLAA he helped enrich the scope, value and importance of the museum’s permanent collection, temporary exhibitions, art auction and symposium. He also strategically planned and created alliances and collaborations with other national and international museums and universities, and brought major collectors, donors, scholars and funding prospects to the museum. His accomplishments also include the organization of Latin American art fairs, art auctions and various lecture series on collecting Latin American art at national symposia. Through all these efforts he has created more opportunities for art sales and art donations to various art organizations.
He is an active board member in the following organizations: Arts Council for Long Beach - Public Arts Commission, The Alive Theater, Venezuelan American Endowment for the Arts (VAEA), International Kids Fund Auction – Jackson Memorial Hospital, LatinArt.com, Agustin Cardenas Foundation, and the Latino Los Angeles Welcome Committee where he serves as Fundraising Co-Chair.

Stefanie's Story - Opera Gives Voice To Autistic Singer

NBC Nightly News featured OCCTAC student Stefanie Diaz and instructor Renee Rulon Cortez in the "Making A Difference" segment on their Friday night national broadcast.
For all of us who have known Stefanie and her family for many years it was an emotional moment. It was wonderful to see how far Stefanie has come in the 9 years she has received therapeutic art classes at our center. Of course, a 2-minute news segment cannot tell her amazing story in much detail. But Dr. Ana Jimènez-Hami, founder and president, remembers. "Stefanie was one of our first students. Her family came to us for help because both Stefanie and her brother have autism. Stefanie displayed severe autistic behavior at that time.

However, Stefanie showed a keen interest in many forms of art. Over the years, she has attended visual art classes, dance and many different music classes. She is currently visiting the center 4 days a week and besides opera, she takes piano, violin and art. We asked her father how these classes have impacted Stefanie and his family. "The difference is a miracle" responds José Luis Diaz. "I'd describe her improvement level as 75 per cent from where she was to the best she can get." Hoping for 100 per cent, Stefanie and her brother keep attending classes and improving more! How did they like the NBC Story? Mr. Diaz: "We are waiting for a DVD copy. We could not watch it on Friday night. Stefanie was at the center in a violin class".

Many of you know that federal funding for Stefanie as well as many others of our students has been cut. We hope to be able to continue to provide classes to all of our students.

We had a fiesta! On Wednesday, March 24th, 2010, we welcomed the new
Mexican Consul Titular Alejandra Garcia Williams and
Consul Para Asuntos Comunitarios Lourdes Chàvez to our center.

The Consuls did not come empty-handed! Many of our students had participated in the international "Este es mi México" annual children's art contest, sponsored by the government of México. Thousands of pieces of art work were sent to Mexico City where a committee of professional artist painters judged the entries. The Consuls came to OCCTAC to congratulate the students who received a certificate of excellence!

Consul Garcia Williams: "Last year, the contest theme celebrated the one hundredth anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. We encourage all children ages 7 to 11 to submit their work this year as well!"

Nikki Soohoo and LOUDreams Exchanging Art visit OCCTAC

A big "Gracias" to our friend Nikki Soohoo who arranged the LOUDreams Exchanging Art visit to our center the last Saturday of February.
Nikki and her friends created a wonderfully inspiring day for our students.

Just before the end of the year we received several phone calls regarding our student Stefanie Diaz, 15.
Back in December reporter Yvette Cabrera had written a very nice article (see previous blog post) about Stefanie for the Orange County Register. Editors at CBS/KCAL in Los Angeles took notice and sent their reporter Suzie Suh and camera man Robert to OCCTAC. Our opera music teacher Renee Rulon Cortez and the Diaz family graciously cleared their schedules to film this segment.

You may have heard that many of our students just like Stefanie no longer receive federal grant money that allowed them to attend classes at OCCTAC. We are trying to provide services as best we can under the cutbacks but we do need your help!

We are really happy to announce that ORQUESTA CARIBE will play for us on June 13th!

Orquesta Caribe was founded in 1972 by Musical Director Armando Gomez. Originally comprised of Cuban exiles who settled in Orange County, Orquesta Caribe now consists of eleven musicians who perform traditional Cuban and Puerto Rican music such as Salsa, Son, Bolero, Cha-Cha, Merengue, and Cumbia.

Through its celebrated history, Orquesta Caribe has shared the stage with many of Latin Musics most famous musical stars including Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, El Gran Combo, Oscar De Leon, Eddie Santiago, Albita and many others.

Dear Friends!

Our Parents in Action Committee is getting together to help one of our most dedicated volunteers. OCCTAC parent Elida has two children attending the center. Both her children are autistic. Her daughter has made such improvements that she is now singing opera in Italian, English and Spanish. Elida was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago. Despite her illness she has been supporting her children and our center tirelessly, working long hours at the center and at times walking a 3-mile roundtrip to get from her home to our center.
She has been there for us. We are trying to give back a little.

Please come to the CAR WASH FOR ELIDA. We are raising funds for her medical care.

We are very grateful to Festival of Children Foundation President Sandy Segerstrom Daniels for opening the doors to her family's home to help us launch our first capital fundraising campaign.
OCCTAC moved two years ago to its current location to accommodate the growing need for space but we are again reaching the limits. In 2000 when we opened our doors we served about 40 families. We are now serving about 800 families! And the number of students keeps growing. It is difficult to coordinate many art classes in a space that is not specifically designed and built to facilitate our center. We know that we will be able to serve our students and community better if we can acquire a permanent center building that we can then design to our specific needs. Santa Ana (California), 10 feb (EFE).- A los 4 años Stephanie, la hija mayor de José Luis y Elida Día, fue diagnosticada con autismo severo y retraso mental y ahora, a sus 14 , llena de magia los escenarios interpretando exigentes óperas con su voz de soprano.

"El caso de Stephanie es considerado por muchos, incluyéndonos a nosotros, como un verdadero milagro y es que su trayecto ha sido muy duro, pero en ningún momento dejamos de buscar ayuda para ella y ese esfuerzo ha valido la pena", dijo el padre de Stephanie, José Luis Díaz, en entrevista con Efe.

La niña nació en Santa Ana, California, en mayo de 1994.

"Nació sin fuerza en los músculos de los párpados y no podía abrir sus ojos, tuvimos que esperar a que cumpliera un año para operarla, también tenía glaucoma y problemas motrices, cuando estuvo más grande salieron a relucir sus problemas de comunicación y luego llegó el diagnóstico de su autismo severo", recordó.

Desde un principio este matrimonio mexicano buscó toda la asesoría posible y preguntando y tocando puertas llegaron al Centro Regional de Salud del Condado de Orange donde Stephanie recibió ayuda.

"Pero el milagro comenzó cuando llegamos al Centro Terapéutico de las Artes para Niños (OCCTAC), hace unos 8 años", dijo Díaz quien también es padre de Abraham, de 12 años quien padece de autismo leve.

En el Centro Terapéutico de las Artes para Niños comenzaron a tratar a Stephanie a través de músicoterapia y otras técnicas que buscan ayudar a los niños especiales a través de diversas manifestaciones artísticas.

Fue así como ingresó a las clases de canto, pintura, ópera, piano, violín, flauta, danzas folclóricas y arpa, entre otras, todo esto alternado con su educación regular. Actualmente cursa en noveno grado en Santa Ana High School.

"La terapia es exigente y requiere extrema constancia para un caso como el de mi hija, por eso mi esposa traía a Stephanie a sus clases cada día, lo hacia transportándose en autobús, sin importar si había sol o si llovía", explicó el orgulloso padre.

La constancia y el esfuerzo de Elida Díaz, madre de Stephanie, cobra una dimensión mucho mayor porque hace 10 años fue diagnosticada con cáncer de seno, al cual logró vencer, pero hace unos 6 meses la enfermedad regresó ahora en su columna y su cerebro.

"A mi esposa le han dado los médicos sólo meses de vida, pero nosotros sabemos que es Dios quien tiene la última palabra", explicó Díaz, quien trabaja en una compañía de mantenimiento haciendo trabajos de reparaciones y pinturas.

La perseverancia y dedicación de unos padres y unos especialistas enfocados en ayudar a Stephanie cambiaron su realidad.

Ella puede comunicarse en inglés y español, ha dado conciertos en iglesias, en la alcaldía de Santa Ana, en el Centro Terapéutico de las Artes para Niños y otros escenarios.

Fue seleccionada para interpretar el himno de los Estados Unidos en el estadio de los Angelinos de Anaheim, para un inicio de temporada del equipo grande liga californiano.

Stephanie canta ópera en inglés, latín, italiano y español, actualmente se prepara para grabar su primer CD, el cual se prevé estará listo en abril de este año.

"Yo invito a todos los padre de niños autistas o niños con retraso a que nunca se den por vencidos, busquen ayuda, toquen puertas, alguna se abrirá y llegará la ayuda", sostuvo Díaz.

"Esto es un camino que requiere mucha paciencia, pero el sacrificio tiene su recompensa, Stephanie, como cada niño autista, es un milagro, un ángel de Dios", concluyó.EFE

Lisa Cohen: KinderArtKids is a wonderful and affordable creative morning program for young children. Holiday Music from our Santa Ana Suzuki String Students

We are proud of our Santa Ana Suzuki String students! Under the guidance of instructor Cynthia Faisst our OCCTAC students have advanced so well that six of them got to participate in this year's Orange County Suzuki Festival on November 15th, held at the Calvary Church of Santa Ana. Held annually each November the event is put on by the Suzuki Music Association of California/LA-OC.

The children in the festival played a sample of pieces from the Suzuki Repertory. The concert started with advanced students playing Concertos such as the first movement from the Bach Violin Concerto for two violins. The Grand Finale featured Twinkle Variations played by nearly 300 students from as young as age 3 and up.

This year SASS students will get to play Allegretto, May Song, Lightly Row and Twinkles from Book I.
Our students are available for performances on Saturdays.

Santa Ana (California), 10 nov (EFE).- El Centro Terapéutico de las Artes para Niños (OCCTAC) ha cambiado la vida de miles en el condado de Orange gracias a la iniciativa de Ana Jiménez-Hami, una puertorriqueña graduada en psicología y musicoterapia.

Esta organización, sin fines de lucro, fue fundada hace 8 años por Jiménez-Hami, quien decidió dejar su trabajo como profesora universitaria para dedicarse a atender a niños y jóvenes con necesidades especiales.

"Cuando hablamos de necesidades especiales es todo, pueden ser niños con autismo, o un niño que ha sido abusado, que tenga algún tipo de problema emocional o algún problema severo de conducta", dijo en entrevista con Efe la fundadora y directora de OCCTAC.

"A través de un trabajo de investigación descubrí que la ciudad de Santa Ana, en el condado de Orange, es la comunidad con el índice más alto de deserción escolar en todo el país, en ese momento supe que tenia que hacer algo porque no es posible que nuestros niños y jóvenes se alejen de la posibilidad de un mejor destino", agregó.

Con un doctorado en psicología educativa y educación especial, Jiménez-Hami se atrevió a dar el paso para ayudar, a través de las artes, a los niños y jóvenes de bajos recursos económicos en una ciudad donde más del 70 por ciento de la población es de origen hispano.

El OCCTAC atiende a más de 1.000 alumnos cada año y quienes reciben clases de guitarra, canto, flauta, piano, arpa, violín, teatro, dibujo, pintura, cerámica, manualidades, bailes folclóricos, ballet y hasta hip hop, entre otras asignaturas, todas orientadas a despertar y descubrir el talento creativo de cada estudiante.

"Más del 50 por ciento de los alumnos que asisten a estas clases están becados, lo que significa que su familia no tiene que pagar por estas clases, pero si les pedimos trabajo voluntario porque hemos descubierto que es más efectivo cuando la gente da algo a cambio de lo que recibe, el resto de los alumnos pagan sólo 30 dólares mensuales por las clases de arte", detalló la directora.

Además de las artes, el OCCTAC ofrece clases para padres, consejería para la familia, grupos de apoyo, intervención en familias en crisis, computación, inglés, tutoría, preparación para el trabajo y lectura. Todas estas clases son completamente gratis.

"Nosotros tenemos programas que comienzan a la edad de 8 meses y atendemos a jóvenes hasta los 21 años, además de los padres, es decir, atendemos de manera integral a toda la familia", explicó.

Haciendo referencia a estudios que así lo indican y a la experiencia vivida en el centro, la boricua resaltó los beneficios del arte en el aspecto mental, cognoscitivo, psicológico, motriz y social de los individuos.

"Nosotros hemos recibido aquí a niños que parecían no tener esperanzas de desarrollo o niños con serios problemas escolares y ahora son unos milagros vivientes", sostuvo.

"Hemos visto como una niña que llegó con un problema severo de autismo ahora canta ópera, toca el piano y el violín de maneja magistral, otros casos donde los niños pasaron de ser estudiantes con notas muy pobres a estudiantes con excelentes calificaciones y así podemos citar muchos, muchos ejemplos", dijo Jiménez-Hami.

Mejorar la autoestima, facilitar la socialización, estimular la disciplina, la concentración y el talento creativo son sólo algunos de los beneficios que el OCCTAC ofrece a sus alumnos.

"Ahora tenemos el reto de conseguir una sede más grande porque hemos crecido mucho en todo este tiempo y queremos seguir atendiendo a tanta gente que requiere nuestros servicios, seguimos trabajando para que eso ocurra porque nuestro sueño es seguirle brindando a la comunidad esperanzas, soluciones y un futuro mejor", concluyó.EFE

Strum, drum, dream: Donation means kids can play
Exhibitor sends drums, horns, guitars to Santa Ana center.

SANTA ANA – In the eight years since the Orange County Children's Therapeutic Arts Center opened, plenty of music teachers have been willing to teach children how to play drums, guitar and saxophone.

The problem: a severe shortage of instruments.

That all changed this afternoon when a semi-tractor trailer arrived carrying 45 new instruments, including two drum sets, acoustic guitars, and brass and woodwind instruments.

All for free.

"Wow," said Daniella Cervantes, 11, as she got her first look at the shiny instruments lined up on tables. "It's very nice and it looks artistic. Now we'll all get a chance to play."

The donation came from a San Francisco Bay-area convention exhibitor – with local offices in Tustin – who read about the center in a Register article last month.

The exhibitor, Coastal International, installs booths at trade conventions and works with Michael Musical Instruments, based in Brazil. The companies work together every year at the NAMM Show in Anaheim, a massive music-merchant exhibit, and store loads of instruments locally after the show ends in January.

The instruments are displayed at the show. Afterward, typically, they are stored until sold. These just didn't sell.

Bob Hill, an executive at Coastal International who lives in San Juan Capistrano, read about the arts center and wanted to help out.

"It cost the company money to store these instruments, so we were looking for a worthy cause," said Hill, who is also an advisory member of the Orange County Human Relations Commission. "I saw this group in the paper and I thought: Perfect."

The arts center, which provides after-school dance, music and art classes for at-risk students and children with developmental disabilities, relies heavily on grant funding and private donations – money that has been hard to come by during the current economic downturn.

About 1,000 children go through the center's doors each year.

"This is so exciting for us. The timing is perfect," said Ana Jimenez-Hami, director of the arts center. "Providing our kids with this kind of activity is exactly what will keep them away from drugs and violence."

The center used to have two electric guitars, which meant students could never check them out to take home and practice. With the donation, it now has more than two dozen six-string and bass guitars.

Several children who got their first look at the new instruments this afternoon stood back in disbelief. But once they started plucking guitar strings and banging on congas and cymbals, the room quickly became a cacophony.

"This is a big help," said Gustavo Figueroa, 19, who grew up going to the Arts Center and now works there. "Now children can come here and learn. And they can explore their creativity."

Great news from Cynthia Faisst, our violin teacher. A group of her violin students recently attended a concert at the Pacific Symphony by invitation of the Heartstring Program.
Chaperon Erin reported that our students and their parents had a wonderful time and many parents realized at the event how enriching the experience was to their families.

Peter Pan

Our own retelling of the beloved story of the boy who wouldn't grow up and his adventures with Captain Hook, all set to beautiful classical music.

Parents, aunties, uncles, grannies, older siblings: since many of our students are young, we are looking for volunteer chaperons to accompany the children to the events.

Honda Helpful Award Winner Kathryn Forrest

Congratulations to our art teacher and visual arts coordinator Kathryn Forrest! Kathryn was selected as one of only three winners out of hundreds of applications as a 2008 HONDA HELPFUL AWARD winner.
Southern California Honda dealers honor three citizens who make a big difference with their helpful work in their community. Kathryn was honored for all her work with our students and our center. Few knew that Kathryn had to take the bus for 8 long months to get from her home in Seal Beach to the center, a 2-hour ride each way, often with a lot of art supplies as luggage. Thanks to her award, she will receive a brand new Honda Civic Hybrid in her favorite color. SoCal Honda also gifted Kathryn with a generous check to cover all ancillary cost. The new car will make her life a lot easier and we are really happy for her!
Kathryn was honored at the Award Ceremony at the Santa Monica Pier on January 22nd. Many family members and friends attended the event. And the sun kept shining despite the gloomy weather forecast!

OCCTAC student Stefanie will have the honor of singing the national anthem on Friday, November 16th at the opening of the Arsenal's pre-season home scrimmage game hosting the Bakersfield Jam.

OCCTAC "Alfa-Kids" in MAGIC BOOK STORYTIME on TV Starting November 13th

Dear Friends!

We have exciting news to share!
Our StoryLady Lisa Cohen is bringing her Magic Book to local television!
In Magic Book our students and the little television viewers learn the alphabet through a magical storytime.

To enter the story, the Alfa Kids have to figure out Alfa Clues to open the Magic Book with the Alfa Key.
Episode One features "Little Bunny FooFoo" and the letter B.

The StoryLady's Magic Book will air Tuesday evenings at 5PM on your local Time Warner Public Access channel starting on November 13th.

"Little Bunny FooFoo" will air through November, Episode 2 "The Frog Prince" will start airing in December, again on Tuesday evenings at 5PM.

OCCTAC Students, Family and Staff wish to say THANK YOU to our friends at Disneyland Resort.
We are very proud to have been invited to participate in Disneyland Resorts "Dream, Imagine, Create: The Art Of Disney Parks" exhibit at this summer's Laguna Beach's Festival of Arts.

It all started with a wonderful student art workshop under the instruction of Disney Artists Hal Lambert, Mada Leach and Howard O'Donnell who visited our center this spring.
Our students had a chance to learn more about animation art from the masters. We also enjoyed Disney cookies and our families were thrilled to receive family passes to the resorts in Anaheim.

Later, 12 student works were chosen to be part of the Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts as part of a special exhibit. Our students attended the grand opening on July 1st.

It was an unforgettable experience for our young artists that we are sure will remain a part of their memories forever. The exhibit closed August 31st.

The Festival of Children Foundation has invited us again to participate in their month-long Festival of Children at South Coast Plaza. Our booth is near Carousel Court, right between the Disney Store and the Nine West Shoe Store. We will be there every weekend in September.

BREAKING NEWS! AN OCCTAC SPECIAL EVENT ON AUGUST 29TH, 2007 FROM 6 -9 PM.

MAESTRO ALBERTO DE LA ROSA AND HIS GROUP TLEN HUICANI FROM VERACRUZ, JALAPA, WILL VISIT THE OC CHILDREN'S THERAPEUTIC ARTS CENTER TO CONDUCT A SPECIAL WORKSHOP AND JAM SESSION WITH OUR HARP STUDENTS.

"From the capital city of Veracruz, Jalapa, Tlen-Huicani (pronounced wee-KAH-ne) is one of the most faithful interpreters of the traditional folk music of that state and also that of much of Latin America.
Tlen-Huicani, which means "the singers" in the indigenous Indian language of Nahuatl, has taken the beautiful "harpa jarocha" or folk harp, and has made it the centerpiece of their music.
Founded in 1973, the group was named best folk group in Mexico by the union of music and theater critics. Group director, Alberto de la Rosa, is one of the most respected musicians in all of Mexico, and is considered among the most outstanding folk harpists in the world. In 2003 the group celebrated another landmark, when they completed 30 years of unforgettable music. With all the many types of music the group has mastered, a program of Tlen-Huicani is like taking a musical journey through Mexico and South America."
