MAESTRO ALBERTO DE LA ROSA AND HIS GROUP TLEN HUICANI FROM VERACRUZ, JALAPA, WILL VISIT THE OC CHILDREN'S THERAPEUTIC ARTS CENTER TO CONDUCT A SPECIAL WORKSHOP AND JAM SESSION WITH OUR HARP STUDENTS. "From the capital city of Veracruz, Jalapa, Tlen-Huicani (pronounced wee-KAH-ne) is one of the most faithful interpreters of the traditional folk music of that state and also that of much of Latin America. Tlen-Huicani, which means "the singers" in the indigenous Indian language of Nahuatl, has taken the beautiful "harpa jarocha" or folk harp, and has made it the centerpiece of their music. Founded in 1973, the group was named best folk group in Mexico by the union of music and theater critics. NBC Nightly News featured OCCTAC student Stefanie Diaz and instructor Renee Rulon Cortez in the "Making A Difference" segment on their Friday night national broadcast. For all of us who have known Stefanie and her family for many years it was an emotional moment. It was wonderful to see how far Stefanie has come in the 9 years she has received therapeutic art classes at our center. Of course, a 2-minute news segment cannot tell her amazing story in much detail. But Dr. Ana Jimènez-Hami, founder and president, remembers. "Stefanie was one of our first students. We are proud of our Santa Ana Suzuki String students! Under the guidance of instructor Cynthia Faisst our OCCTAC students have advanced so well that six of them got to participate in this year's Orange County Suzuki Festival on November 15th, held at the Calvary Church of Santa Ana. Held annually each November the event is put on by the Suzuki Music Association of California/LA-OC. Michelle and Dominique Juarez on stage Both SASS and about 20 TEC (Talent Education Center) students participated in this event. OCCTAC SASS Students Michelle, Dominique, Adrian, Clemente, Nathalie, Jacqueline, ages 4-14 The children in the festival played a sample of pieces from the Suzuki Repertory. The concert started with advanced students playing Concertos such as the first movement from the Bach Violin Concerto for two violins. The Grand Finale featured Twinkle Variations played by nearly 300 students from as young as age 3 and up. This year SASS students will get to play Allegretto, May Song...
